The exhibition, "Graphic Content" looked at creating a platform where the commonalities between graphic illustrations and fine art could be compared and simultaneously used the same platform to explore the contrasts that set these two fields apart, despite being so similar. Although fine art and graphic art lent to and borrowed from each other, there had existed a debate that questioned if both disciplines could be viewed, evaluated and appreciated in the same light.
Looking at how the comic strip had evolved into the much more nuanced and layered format of the graphic novel that was seen then, one of the chief interests of the show was to look at the building of a linear narrative using text along with image. If historically speaking, the comic book had truly filled the gap between magazine and movie, then they tried to place together narratives which, although were made as still images, brought out a dialogue and a sense of motion.
The idea was to put together a group of storytellers and their visual stories, to see how the image supported the story, how the story supported the image, or how at times the image itself was the story.
